Cities must recertify every 3 years, and this go around Bowie was able to obtain 500 points and move up from bronze to silver status. We are so pleased to be participating in the SMC program for just about a decade now and have no plans to stop. SMC is the organization which requires Green Teams, along with many other actions across an array of sustainability-related topics. There are mandatory and priority actions as well as areas for innovation.
“I am so proud of the City of Bowie for prioritizing sustainability efforts to keep us part of the Sustainable Maryland Certified family”, said Mayor Timothy Adams. “We have been participating in this program for a decade and we don’t plan on stopping any time soon. Thank you to Sustainable Maryland and all those involved.”
According to Mike Hunninghake, Director of the Sustainable Maryland program, “We are pleased to be awarding a record number of certifications this year. These certifications show a commitment to sustainability by Maryland’s municipalities that is truly impressive in both depth and breadth. The commitments and associated actions are a critical investment for a future where local governments will increasingly be at the forefront in the fight against climate change. Sustainable Maryland stands ready to support and celebrate these communities, elected officials, and Green Teams.”
