Long Term Benefits
Salary Continuation Plan/Short Term Disability
The City provides Short-term Disability coverage for illness or injury that is not job related. It is available for up to 6 months. Employees are eligible for this coverage upon successful completion of the new hire probationary period.
Regular, full-time employees are eligible for salary continuance after they have been out of work for a non-work related illness or injury (as defined by the plan) for more than 10 consecutive days. Benefits are equal to 2/3 (66.66%) of their weekly pay. Medical documentation is required and the employee will be placed on Family/Medical Leave (per FMLA) in addition to the salary continuation plan.
Long-Term Disability
Long-term Disability insurance coverage is provided to regular full-time employees on their date of hire. It is provided to employees to ensure that if they become disabled (as defined by the plan) and are unable to work as a result of an accident or illness while employed by the City, that the employee will have an income while they are recuperating or if they are permanently disabled according to the plan. The income protection benefit is paid in full for the employee by the City.
Long-term Disability may begin six months after the disability occurs and may be payable until you are age 65 (employee must use Short-term Disability first). This is subject to periodic review by the insurance company.
Employees may receive 2/3 (66.66%) of their pay up to a maximum of $4,000 a month for a covered disability as defined by the plan.
Long-Term Care Insurance
The City offers regular full-time employees Long-term Care insurance. The City pays for a base plan with the following benefits:
- A monthly benefit of $1,000
- A lifetime benefit of 3 years (or $36,000), and
- An elimination period (or deductible) of 30 days.
In order to receive this benefit, employees must fill out the enrollment form. In addition to the base plan, employees have the option to "buy up" and increase their benefits (at their own expense) as follows:
- Increase the monthly benefit up to $6,000 (in increments of $1,000)
- Increase the lifetime benefit to 6 years or lifetime
- Guarantee the monthly benefit will grow at 5% annual compounded rate (uncapped).
The plan is fully portable, meaning employees can take it with them when they terminate employment with the City of Bowie. Employees have access to a 24-hour hotline for questions regarding care for themselves or a family member. The employee's spouse and family (parents, adult children, in-laws, brothers and sisters, stepparents, step-in-laws, and grandparents) can also buy Long-term Care Insurance through this plan. They will be required to complete a medical questionnaire and they will be billed separately.
