Bowie Golf Course Reopening November 3

The City of Bowie is happy to announce that the Bowie Golf Course is reopening under new management. Starting November 3, golfers can resume playing at the course.

The course will be managed by Indigo Sports Group, a Troon company based in Reston, Virginia. The company operates courses throughout the US, including the Preserve at Eisenhower Golf Course in Crownsville and Compass Pointe Golf Course in Pasadena.

The Bowie Golf Course closed temporarily during October 2021 while the City worked toward a new arrangement for management of the course.

The course has been maintained while new management was put in place and is ready to go.

Ownership

The golf course property is owned by the City of Bowie. For the past 40 years, the property has operated and managed by Bowie Golf Management (BGM). That arrangement ended on September 30, 2021 when the owners of BGM retired. Indigo Sports Group took over management duties on November 1.

The Process of Securing New Management of the Course

On October 18, 2021, the City Council approved Indigo Sports as new managers of the Bowie Golf Course and authorized the City Manager to enter a management agreement with the company.

The process to put new management in place at the course took some time to complete. In April 2021, the City advertised for a new firm to manage the golf course and two proposals were received, one from Emerald Golf Management and the other from Indigo Golf Partners. The City Council chose to pursue an agreement with Emerald Golf Management in July. Regretfully, the parties were unable to come to an agreement on terms of a contract to manage the course.

At its meeting on October 4, 2021, the City Council discussed management  of the course and voted to direct staff to:

  1. Give Emerald Golf Management until October 8 to accept the City’s terms;
    Emerald did not respond to the City by October 8, 2021.

  2. Move forward with negotiations with the other bidder, Indigo Golf Partners;
    Negotiations with Indigo proceeded swiftly.

  3. In parallel with above listed efforts, make all practical efforts to open the facility for use, using 1099 contractors and staff to the extent possible.
    City staff worked throughout October 2021 to clean the facilities and get the clubhouse ready for reopening.

Information for Bowie Golf Course Members

BGM has notified the City that it has begun the process of refunding the pro-rata amounts due to members who had paid for memberships beyond September 30, 2021.
