Update on the status of the Bowie Senior Center

Thank you for all of the inquiries about reopening the Bowie Senior Center. We realize that you are eager to return, and we look forward to the time when we can welcome you back. To prepare for that day, staff has developed a re-opening plan, which we will implement when we are able.

For now, the Bowie Senior Center is being used as a critical vaccine clinic three days a week. That operation will continue for several more weeks. If you are not vaccinated yet, please take advantage of this convenient opportunity to get protected. (Visit or call 301-262-6200.)

Maryland is taking steps to begin reopening some senior centers across the state. They will be opening a few centers soon and will watch them closely to make sure they are operating safely and not causing outbreaks. Gradually they will allow more centers to open. We await guidance from the Maryland Department of Aging about how that will occur.

What we do know is that when the Bowie Senior Center does reopen, the Center will not be operating as it did before the pandemic. COVID-19 safety protocols will be in place. That means we will require temperature checks and will ask health screening questions. Participants will be required to wear a face mask at all times, maintain six feet of social distancing between others, and wash hands frequently. Reservations will be required for many programs and activities and the group activities that do occur will be very limited in size.

There are encouraging signs that we will eventually be able to put this pandemic behind us, but we are not there yet. Please continue to take all necessary precautions to protect yourself and others from the virus. We appreciate your patience and will provide more reopening updates as we can. Meanwhile, the Senior Center continues to provide services through on-line classes and programs, responding to phone calls for assistance, Food Pantry and County meal delivery, drive-thru and Grab-N-Go events, monthly Newsletter, and sharing information on social media.
